ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
What Is It?
Neurodevelopmental disorder persisting into adulthood in more than 60% of cases. Presents with inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity causing functional impairment in work, relationships, and daily activities.
How Is It Diagnosed?
DSM-5 criteria, clinical history, adult ADHD rating scales (ASRS), cognitive screen. Rule out anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and substance use.
How Is It Treated?
Stimulant medications (amphetamine salts, methylphenidate) are most effective. Non-stimulants (atomoxetine, viloxazine, guanfacine) if stimulants contraindicated. CBT, coaching, organizational strategies.
Tests and Imaging Typically Needed
Clinical interview and rating scales. CBC, BMP, thyroid if medical cause suspected. EKG before stimulants if cardiac risk. Exclude vision and hearing deficits.
