Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever)
What Is It?
IgE-mediated allergic inflammation of the nasal mucosa triggered by pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mold. Causes sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy eyes, and runny nose.
How Is It Diagnosed?
Clinical history and exam. Skin prick testing or specific IgE blood panel to identify allergens.
How Is It Treated?
Intranasal corticosteroids (fluticasone, mometasone) first-line. Antihistamines (cetirizine, fexofenadine). Allergen immunotherapy for severe or refractory cases.
Tests and Imaging Typically Needed
Specific IgE panel (RAST) or skin prick test. CBC (eosinophilia). Nasal smear for eosinophils.
