What Is It?
Major depressive disorder involves persistent sadness, loss of interest, fatigue, sleep changes, and impaired concentration lasting 2 weeks or more.
How Is It Diagnosed?
PHQ-9 screening tool, clinical interview. Rule out bipolar disorder, thyroid disease, medication side effects.
How Is It Treated?
SSRIs (sertraline, fluoxetine, escitalopram) first-line. SNRIs, bupropion, mirtazapine alternatives. Psychotherapy essential. Crisis plan for suicidal ideation.
Tests and Imaging Typically Needed
TSH, CBC, BMP, B12, folate, vitamin D. Urine drug screen if indicated.
