Hyperthyroidism
What Is It?
Overactive thyroid producing excess hormone. Causes weight loss, palpitations, anxiety, tremor, heat intolerance, and irregular periods.
How Is It Diagnosed?
Low TSH (<0.4 mIU/L), elevated free T4 and/or T3. Thyroid antibodies (TSI, TPO), radioactive iodine uptake scan.
How Is It Treated?
Methimazole or PTU to block thyroid hormone synthesis. Beta-blockers for symptom control. Radioactive iodine ablation or thyroidectomy for definitive treatment.
Tests and Imaging Typically Needed
TSH, free T4, free T3, TSI antibodies, CBC, liver function.
