Upper Respiratory Infection (URI / Common Cold)

What Is It?

Viral infection of the upper respiratory tract (nose, throat, sinuses). Causes runny nose, sore throat, cough, and congestion. Self-limiting in 7-10 days.

How Is It Diagnosed?

Clinical diagnosis. Rapid strep test to rule out streptococcal pharyngitis. COVID-19 test if clinically indicated.

How Is It Treated?

Supportive care: rest, hydration, saline nasal rinse, decongestants, analgesics. Antibiotics NOT indicated for viral URI. Honey for cough in adults.

Tests and Imaging Typically Needed

Rapid strep test, COVID-19 test, influenza test if in season.
